With enough time, everything becomes fresh and new again. Such is the case with the Jackie bag by Gucci, which gets its latest incarnation this season as the Jackie 1961

What’s with the 1961, you ask? That’s the nod to the year the bag first made its debut. Of course, the ‘Jackie’ comes from the inimitable style icon Jackie Kennedy who was photographed carrying it so much that her name was at first informally attached to it before Gucci properly christened the style later on.

The Gucci of today is very different from the iterations of the past in that it goes back to basics. The silhouette of the bag is streamlined and simplified, returning to its classic, crescent hobo shape. The hardware is now the straightforward but immediately recognisable gold piston.

Alessandro Michele, in fact, dug into his own archives and based the design of the Jackie 1961 on a vintage piece from his personal collection. Call it a testament to the versatility of good design, but the Jackie 1961 pairs just as easily with the freewheeling variety of Michele’s designs for the house, from kitschy tailoring to shrunken grunge.

The key colourways that Gucci is proposing are red and black leather, as well as its signature GG supreme canvas and web stripe. The small and mini versions have extended palettes: pastel shades of purple, turquoise and pink. At 59-year-old, the Jackie has never looked so fresh.
