What does the cool crowd wear to a beach party?
For Loewe creative director JW Anderson, the answer lies in Paula’s, a now-defunct boutique on Ibiza set up by architect-turned-designer Armin Heinemann in the ’70s that evolved into a cultural playground for the bourgeoise bohemians of the time. Frequented by celebrities (Freddie Mercury, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino Garavani) and arty eccentrics aplenty, it spawned a riotous, eclectic take on bohemian dressing, anchored by the ascetic Heinemann’s obsession with florals and other nature-inspired prints.
The result today has been Loewe Paula’s Ibiza, a colour-splashed capsule collection by the Spanish luxury label that filters Paula’s haute hippie chic through Anderson’s modern and equally irreverent eye. Debuted in 2017, a new edition has been released every year since and the third and latest — in stores April 15 — is easily the biggest and most youthful.
Besides pieces that look right out of a surfer’s wardrobe given an arty, tactile touch (think hoodies with tassled hems and leather-accented bucket hats), there are pretty and dramatic balloon-sleeved maxi dresses; a bum bag (a first for Loewe), and all of the brand’s signature bags remade in now-trendy raffia. Add the whimsical animal-shaped small leather goods and accessories that Anderson has made a staple at Loewe — all in exuberant hues that Heinemann would approve of — and the vision of Ibiza party chic has never been cooler. Or jauntier.
