Maison Valentino has birthed plenty of hit accessories under the Valentino Garavani Stud and VLogo family that gets its name from its distinct, graphic stud embellishment. Introduced in 2010, what’s become a house signature is one part punk, the other architecture (its geometric shape is inspired by bugnato reliefs seen on Roman palazzos) and has been reimagined in some of the most playful ways possible.

The most recent interpretation of the motif happened for Valentino Collezione Milano Spring/Summer 2021 when the brand debuted a macro-sized (read: bolder) version it calls the Valentino Garavani Roman Stud for a series of bags.

For the Spring 2022 collection, Valentino expands on the idea of a collection that allows the wearer to interpret and mix-and-match wardrobe perennials however she pleases, suitably dubbing it “Valentino Le Progrès Paris 3ème Arrondissement”. And with it, the brand debuts another Stud iteration that’s as big on versatility and function as it is on personality: the Valentino Garavani Stud Sign.

The Valentino Garavani Stud Sign bag comes in a full nappa leather version and a version that mixes nappa leather with soft suede.

A generously roomy flap bag, it sees the Stud detail turn up on a padded leather strip found along the chain shoulder strap: seven “maxi” sized studs in a cool antique brass finish. The bag’s clever design – eyelets not on top, but on the top corners of the front and back to allow one to slide the strap through and change up its length – means multiple ways of carrying it as well as a different look each time.

Wear the strap short as a double-chain sling and the studded band becomes a statement shoulder rest or grip. Wear the strap long as a single-chain sling and the studded band rests across the front of the bag as an edgy decorative detail.

Then there’s also the option of tucking the chain entirely into the bag and carrying the Valentino Garavani Stud Sign as a clutch; that Studded-out leather strip now one mean knuckle duster-style handle.

The Valentino Garavani Stud Sign bag comes in six colours.

Giving the bag even more punch is the brand’s VLogo hardware over the clasp as well as its unexpectedly pop finishes that are signature of the Maison. Choose from cushiony nappa leather in timeless black; a pretty candy pink dubbed Feminine; a vibrant green as well as a cool ivory. Those looking for an even plusher texture should consider the violet and Titian – an intense tangerine – that comes in a mix of nappa leather and suede.

The result is one of the season’s most youthful day-to-evening shoulder bags – perfect for busy women who are seeking pragmatism without dialling down the fun. Think pop star Aisyah Aziz who recently added to her repertoire an album of jazzy covers called Pearls, the gregarious model Noelle Woon who is making her mark as an illustrator (check out her work on @toddlesstuff), the in-demand graphic artist Nadirah “Inkten” Razak of art collective Ink And Clog Studio, and top Singapore model Layla Ong.

When you’re on the go as much, smart designs like the Valentino Garavani Stud Sign call for the flashing of another sign: that of victory.
