Gabrielle Chanel was a superstitious woman and had chandeliers in every room because she believed in the healing power of crystals. And in the French maison’s latest “Les Talismans de Chanel” high jewellery collection, on display at the Ngee Ann City boutique (#01-04) from now till September 30, the idea of protection is also invoked.

In true Chanel fashion, expect nothing less than the most exquisite workmanship, innovative materials and a surprise or two when you head down. Here, fun facts to know about the pieces you’ll be ogling:

#1: The Hypnotique series

What looks like enamel is actually lacquer that has been painstakingly hand-painted layer by layer.

#2: The Charismatique series

We love the idea of having high jewellery take on a semblance of costume jewellery, which is what Chanel has done here. Paying exorbitant prices for what looks like costume jewellery is the ultimate irony and an all-pervasive trend that seems destined to stay. But make no mistake, the baubles on these Chanel babies are pink and violet sapphires, anchored by a breathtaking sugarloaf-cut blue tanzanite.

#3: The Envoutante series

Call this the only reason you need to visit the exhibition: The creme de la creme of the entire collection, the Envoutante necklace is fit for any queen. The diamond making up the pendant alone is a sweet eight carat, but for the entire necklace, expect over 60 carats worth. This is also an entirely one-off piece, as the size and cut of the diamonds required to make a second would be nearly impossible to replicate.
