Watch aficionados would know that getting hold of a special design by Omega is like queuing up for a pair of hype sneakers. You snooze, you lose. Such has been the case with the Swiss brand’s special releases in the past. Cue the “#speedytuesday” Speedmaster that was sold exclusively on the brand’s Instagram page last year: That piece was snapped up totally in a mere four hours and 15 minutes.
Now the brand’s upcoming launch in October for a special edition of its Railmaster series is primed for the hype generation. The denim-inspired Railmaster has all the trappings of a highly sought-after design. There is its trendy blue jeans watch strap, a denim-inspired brushed dial and an overall vintage cachet. There’s also a steel version featuring a denim-brushed dial for those who prefer something more subdued.
Priced at $6,250, this upcoming launch is the latest push by Omega to shout out about this low-key collection which debuted in 1957 and celebrated its 60th-anniversary last year with a limited edition design as a must-have house icon. When the watch was created, it was marketed as the “blue collar” timepiece for technicians ad railroad workers who were bombarded by strong electromagnetic fields on a day-to-day basis.
Even if you’re not buying into the nostalgia, perhaps this nugget of information might appeal to the watch geeks: The new Calibre 8806 powering the ticker is 15 times more resistant than the original Railmaster models. Now that’s enough reason to have your name on the waitlist.
