The new Carrie K Artisanal Jewellery collection comes teeming with ants. But look – it’s a cuter concept than it sounds.
Local jewellery designer Carolyn Kan has done the impossible with her label Carrie K’s new jewellery collection, Burglar Ants – she’s made bugs crawling up your neck and fingers an interesting, even desirable, concept.
Launched last week at Blueprint 2015, the collection feature a trio of, yes, burglar ants caught in mid-heist. On an open ring (above), they huddle together, hoisting a gem. On another ring, one of them takes a break and puts on an eye mask (you can only see this through the magnifying glass – see below).
This level of detail – an eye mask, on an ant! – is possible thanks to a combination of 3-D printing technology with traditional jewellery-making techniques. Kan explains that 3-D printing was used to make the wax master from which the pieces were cast, and everything else is done by hand.
The rings and choker are all available in 10K yellow gold, 10K rose gold, and silver, with either white or pink topaz.
The pieces bridge the gap between small and statement, perfect for anyone who’s more comfortable with dainty jewellery but wants that little bit of punch. And considering how many of us are terrified of creepy crawlies, any of these will easily start – or end, if you like – a conversation.
