Say “vintage Alhambra” and the images of sautoir necklaces draped on the necks of chic women like Grace Kelly, Romy Schneider and Francoise Hardy would most likely come to mind. Or you could very well be thinking of the dedicated jewellery collection that Van Cleef & Arpels launched last year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its iconic four-leaf clover jewellery. That outing saw the French maison launch several new designs based on its archival pieces and stayed true to the collection’s original look that came with a beaded contour and a central gold bead.
The New Look
Fast forward to this year and the Vintage Alhambra line is growing. For the latest update launching in stores on Sept 2, Van Cleef & Arpels sticks to the vintage route and riffs on the guilloche aesthetic that it used in the 1910s for watch dials and in the ’30s for cases, powder compacts and minaudieres. This sunbeam-like engraving lands on a series of yellow gold sautoir necklace, bracelet, pendant, and watch, for an authentic Deco-era effect. And for an even fancier and shinier look, the pendants and bracelets come with alternating guilloched four-leaf clover charms and diamond-paved charms. Like how vintage heritage bags can elevate your outfit, we say, these pieces will do just the same.
