Camp’s the theme of this year’s Met Gala. No, not the one where you pitch tents and gather around a fire to roast marshmallows – although that was apparently Celine Dion’s first thought when heard the theme, according to Vulture. It’s the one where exaggeration, flamboyance and theatricality reign. So how do you pull off a look that’s over the top without being too garish? These stars showed us how.
1. Lady Gaga

MET GALA LADY GAGA Prepping the skin is always the most important step in any makeup no matter how clean or how intense. I started with the first ever Marc Jacobs Beauty skincare called "Youthquake" moisturizer. Its the perfect start to add hydration and plump the skin before makeup. I used the Accomplice concealers instead of a foundation and topped with the Accomplice powder for a soft focus natural glow. Because the eye makeup was so intense I needed to make sure the skin was balanced and beautiful. I used Highliner Gel Crayons on her eyes. Shade "Pink of me" in the waterline to exaggerate. I defined and lined the eyes with Blaquer and then went over with Magic Marc'er in Blaquer. Velvet Noir to coat the lashes before I apply the hand made lashes. Lips were Liquid Lip Crayon in Flaming-Oh! and topped with Enamored Hydrating Lip Gloss Stick in Sweet Escape! #youthquake #marcjacobsbeauty #ladygaga #sarahtannomakeup @marcjacobsbeauty thank you for the help w the lashes @werkhunty xoxo 💋 #metgala Thank you to my assistant @kayli_rachelle
If you look back at previous Met Galas, you’ll notice that there are rare moments that stand out and that will be talked about for years to come – remember Rihanna’s omelette dress from Chinese designer Guo Pei in 2015? This year, there were several show-stopping eye looks (see supermodel Gigi Hadid and Swedish singer Lykke Li) but none came close to Lady Gaga’s luscious and bejewelled gold and black lashes. The proportion, the thickness of the falsies, the gold glitter, the white, purple and black eyeliner, the bronzed skin and the fuschia pink lippie – everything was perfectly executed and on theme, thanks to her long-time makeup artist Sara Tanno, of course.
2. Lily Collins
With a thick-banded pale pink hairband, sky-high beehive hair that’s let down and embellished with tiny flowers, ivory skin and lips that are just as pale, Lily Collins was the epitome of unnatural, campy beauty. We love that she went with matte pastel purple eyeshadow instead of green to match her Cartier jewels, and how her eyeliner and falsies were perfection.

Spiderman actress Zendaya’s Cinderella dress and pumpkin carriage clutch was on theme, sure. But her eyeshadow, which matched her dress and hairband perfectly was the glue that pulled the look together.
