Long gone are the days of art being confined to walls. If this year’s Venice Biennale is anything to go by, artwear – coined by the fashion fiends of Instagram – is on the come up. If you’re not one for its accompanying theatrics – cue Lady Gaga – Italian label Marella’s spin on wearable art is worth checking out.
Currently in its sixth season, ART.365 riffs off Marella’s sophisticated, tailored designs. The series taps artists and painters to reimagine the brand’s monochrome palette. The third and latest to lend her canvas to the collab is Italy-based Swede, Liselotte Watkins. Here’s the low down on the fashion illustrator: known for her cubist paintings of women, she’s chalked up credits with major luxury and cult labels alike. She’s big on feminism – fitting given this year’s #womenswave – and most recently showed alongside iconic modernist painter (and Matisse disciple) Sigrid Hjerten.
Watkins’ latest venture, LW x ART.365, features two exclusive prints. While the star print of the capsule boasts her’ signature colour palette of orange, pink and white, its accompanying black-and-white Picasso-esque mosaic makes for a less bold option. Not all of the collection is swept up in a flurry of print, however. The line-up includes a tailored, black and white satin blazer and matching pair of cigarette trousers. For the playful but colour-shy: A simple black and white graphic tee.
Now available at Level 3 of Takashimaya, each piece from LW x ART.365 is suitable for all-year wear. Made from cooling crepe envers satin, the collection is crease-proof, light and is resistant to water damage. Even with its new frills, the capsule doesn’t skimp on workmanship. Made in Italy and expertly quality-checked, each item upholds Marella’s high standards of production. And as with art of the hanging variety, upkeep is essential. From free alterations to post-purchase check-ins, you’re covered.
