The 11 women here have all been regular faces in our pages and posts since as far back as 2015. They’re all stylish and into fashion in their own way – one reason why they keep popping up in FEMALE. They’re also all involved in the creative industry, constantly bringing to it a fresh voice and ideas – that makes reason number two.
We chat and share with one another news, advice and – okay, we admit it – sometimes gossip. We’ve hung out, partied and – in some cases – travelled together (yes, we’ve seen each other in PJs). We’ve also collaborated on some pretty cool “firsts”: a music video, a Covid lockdown photo diary, many of their debut editorial features to name a few.
You can call these women a core part of FEMALE’s community. We’d like to call them friends.

The other is for the National Youth Council’s Y-Talk series that looks at the struggles youths face, especially in these pandemic
times.”
CURRENT OBSESSION: “Crime documentaries. It’s been a longstanding obsession of mine for awhile now. I would say my fascination with true crime comes from being a woman living in this society. Growing up as a woman in Malaysia, there is a certain kind of survival instinct we have to develop. I used to have self-imposed rules for myself like, no going to the petrol station after sunset, no walking to carparks alone, locking the car door as soon as you get in and I would never ever dream of walking alone outside after dark. I know of countless stories of girlfriends getting assaulted as they were going about their daily lives, myself included. I think knowing more about murder and crime makes me feel less powerless and a bit more in control. These things can and will happen to anyone. These documentaries obviously highlight the most bizarre cases and they’re often so extreme in the brutality and the callousness but I just want to understand the mindset of someone who would do such things. It’s basically hearing from the mind of a killer/perpetrator.”
BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT: “Finding gratitude during the height of the pandemic. At one of my lowest moments, I found a way to locate gratitude. The first time I did it, I was sure I was doing something futile, woo-woo and stupid. It has turned out to be one of the best things I’ve ever done. It felt good. It felt joyful. It elevates you, reverses your outlook on the world. It changes how you treat people, it changes how you treat yourself. You can’t get busy hating yourself when you have to find things that matter to you to be grateful for. Gratitude doesn’t leave room for negativity.”
ONE THING YOU’D LIKE TO MASTER: “Acting. It’s something I got into quite recently. I didn’t go to drama or acting school so it’s definitely still a learning process for me.”

SOCIAL CAUSE YOU CHAMPION: “The environment. When I started diving, it really opened my eyes to the human destruction of nature and ever since, I made a promise to myself to do whatever I can to minimise my personal impact on the earth. I started off small by not littering, then I slowly started recycling all my recyclable goods (that includes washing all of them thoroughly, because the recycle centre doesn’t accept contaminated items) and also bringing my own da bao containers (I have a tiffin carrier I constantly keep in our car for takeaways). I hope to get more involved in the community and join some beach cleanups!”

I also just started as an art consultant for Metis Art, a Singapore-headquartered advisory and education group targeted at younger people looking to start or grow an art collection, make social impact through patronage, or simply understand the sometimes mysterious art world a little better. With all the talk in the past year about art being non-essential, working to grow patronage in the local ecosystem becomes all the more important.”

I hope to continue to help people realise this through the programme at multi-concept Telok Ayer Arts Club and the educational courses at Metis.”
A SURPRISING THING ABOUT YOU: “I’m shy and a homebody.”
COMMUNITY IS: “An overused word these days; a TV series; and the most important thing.”
Cotton hoodie sweatshirt and nylon-blend turtleneck, Prada
WHAT DO YOU DO: “I juggle between mum duties to two little humans and being the co-founder of creative agency, Elementary Co. Our company has always tried to champion social good projects and this year, mental health is a focus with campaigns for the likes of the Singapore Mental Health Film Festival; a social enterprise called Shop by The Social Co. that allows people to donate groceries to seniors in need; and We The Good, a platform that brings the most crucial fundraising initiatives together in one space.”
CURRENT OBSESSION: “Home decor and improvement. I spend so much more time at home now since we’ve been working from home for the past year, so I’ve been on one home improvement project after another to create a dream sanctuary for my family and our friends whom we’ve been hosting a lot more of.”
